  • 1 academic debate

English-French dictionary of law, politics, economics & finance > academic debate

  • 2 academic

•• Academic 1. of a school, college, or university. 2. scholarly as opposed to technical or practical. 3. of theoretical interest only (Oxford American Dictionary).

The U.S. Six Japanese academics convened in Tokyo and warned reporters not to believe one word in my book (Newsweek) Далее в тексте находим подтверждение того, что речь идет именно об университетских ученых:...the six academics, all affiliated with major Japanese universities.
The Institute took me, already a middle aged man devoid of academic credentials, substantially on faith, gambling on the existence of scholarly capacities that remained to be demonstrated. That injected a new and highly politicized dimension into what so far had seemed an academic debate (International Herald Tribune).
•• Русское слово академик переводится обычно Academician, хотя это слово мало что говорит большинству англичан или американцев, и я предпочитаю перевод member of the Academy of Sciences.
Giddens is often described by colleagues as “clever” or “ambitious”... – a backhanded compliment in the staid world of British academe.
